A furnace not blowing hot air — or no air at all — usually comes down to a thermostat setting, a dirty filter, a blower problem, or the burners failing to fire. Whether the problem is no air or cold air points you to different causes. Here is how to tell them apart and fix the common ones yourself.

No Air vs. Cold Air — They Are Different

No air at all from the vents points to the blower, power, or thermostat. Air blowing but cold means the blower works but the burners are not heating — a different set of causes. Stand at a vent with the heat on and note which you have before troubleshooting.

If There Is No Air at All

• Thermostat: set to HEAT and fan to AUTO or ON; replace batteries.
• Power: check the furnace switch and breaker — see furnace not turning on.
• Blower motor or capacitor: if the furnace fires but no air moves, a failed blower motor or its capacitor is likely — a pro repair.
• Clogged filter: a severely blocked filter can choke airflow to almost nothing.

If Air Blows But It Is Cold

Cold air means the blower runs but the burners are not producing heat. The usual causes are the thermostat fan set to ON (running constantly between cycles), a dirty flame sensor shutting the burners down, an overheated furnace on limit lockout, or an ignition failure. Quick DIY Checks

1. Confirm the thermostat is on HEAT, set above room temp, with fresh batteries.
2. Replace the air filter if it is dirty, then cycle the power to reset.
3. Make sure supply and return vents are open and unblocked.
4. Listen: does the furnace ignite (whoosh/click) but no air moves? Blower issue. Does air move but stay cold? Burner/ignition issue.
5. Check the furnace door LED for an error code and match it to the legend inside the panel.

Call an HVAC technician for a failed blower motor or capacitor, a bad gas valve or control board, or if the furnace short cycles and cannot maintain heat.
